LITCHFIELD – On Monday evening, Litchfield’s area legislators coordinated a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Morgan Weir American Legion Post 27. State Rep. Karen Reddington-Hughes (R-66) and State Senator Stephen Harding (R-30) participated in the event, which drew a crowd of distinguished veterans and members of the community.

“Proper flag etiquette is a small way we can all show reverence to one of the strongest uniting symbols of our country. I appreciate the effort of the American Legion in making sure that these flags received a dignified retirement,” said Reddington-Hughes.

“I can’t say enough about Post 27 and their patriotism – it is truly inspiring,” Sen. Stephen Harding said. “This emotional ceremony brings the community together to commemorate an honorable ending for worn-out flags. It emphasizes our freedoms and our liberties. From the stirring National Anthem sung flawlessly by Cora Grandy to the participation of Eagle Scout Rowan Schulde and Boy Scout Troop 29, this Flag Day event was unforgettable and an honor for Rep. Reddington-Hughes and me to be a part of.”

According to the U.S. Flag Code, the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Prior to Monday’s event, the legislators collected damaged and worn flags that had been dropped off at the Litchfield Town Hall. The donated flags were inspected and all those deemed to be unserviceable were officially retired.
