In September, as a result of federally approved legislation, there will be a new requirement of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to provide breast density notifications to women across America. This information can help individuals identify breast cancer signs early, a critical component to treating the disease.

To celebrate and recognize this achievement, I will be joined by members of Are You Dense?, legislators and members of the public, at a press conference at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. We will hold the event on Tuesday, September 10, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

    Are You Dense?

The fight for patient notification originated in the 66th District, with the efforts of Nancy Cappello. After her initial breast cancer diagnosis, Cappello founded the organization Are You Dense? with the main goal of improving notification laws. In 2009, Connecticut adopted a law to implement a breast density notification requirement. While this was a success, unfortunately Nancy passed away due to treatment complications related to her cancer.

After Nancy’s passing, her husband, Dr. Joe Cappello, took the Executive Director role within the organization – attempting to ensure important density information was available to all women and to help prevent future deaths.
