New Low-Income Discount Rate for Electric Customers Apply by Nov. 1

Beginning on December 1, 2023, a new electric bill discount will be available to you if you have a financial hardship status on your electric account. Based on your household income or receipt of a public assistance benefit, you may be eligible for a 10% or 50% discount on your electric bill per month. For example, if you have a $100 monthly bill, it would be $10 less if you receive a 10% discount or $50 less if you receive the 50% discount.

New CT Prescription Drug Discount Card Program Launches Oct. 2

All Connecticut Residents Can Sign Up for the Free Discount Card To Receive Savings on Medication

State Officials have announced prescription drug discount card program will launch in Connecticut on October 2, 2023, enabling all residents of the state to receive savings on certain prescription drugs.

The program was established by a new law I supported (Public Act 23-171), which is to be administered by the Office of the State Comptroller.

Application Period Open for Connecticut Energy Assistance Program

Thee application period for the 2023-2024 winter season of the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) will begin on September 1, 2023. The program helps Connecticut residents – including both homeowners and renters – with the costs associated with heating their homes.

Basic benefits toward heating bills range from $180 to $530 depending on income, size of household, and need. Benefits are available for households with incomes up to 60% of the state median income, which equates to roughly $79,910

Hearing on Health Insurance Increase Request

Hartford — An informational public meeting is being held later this month on 10 rate filings from 9 health insurers for 2024 plans both on and off Access Health CT, the state’s federal Affordable Care Act exchange. The public informational meeting will be held in a hybrid format, both in person at the Legislative Office Building, in Hartford, and online at CT-N.

The insurers are seeking an average hike of 12.4% on individual health plans next year and 14.8% on small group plans.

DEEP To Hold Hearings on Proposed Electric Vehicle Registrations

Hartford — The state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is accepting written comments on two proposed regulations, one that would ban the sales of new gas-powered passenger cars (beginning in 2035) and another that would gradually prohibit the sale of new gas-powered trucks that are used to ship goods and provide essential services.

A Public Hearing for passenger vehicles (PR 2023-023) will take place on August 22, 2023 at 9:00 am.

CT Extreme Hot Weather Protocol Activated

Temperatures over the next several days are expected to be very hot and humid. Governor Lamont is directing Connecticut’s extreme hot weather protocol to be activated and in effect through 8am on Sunday, July 30.

While enacted, a system is set up for state agencies, municipalities, and other partners to coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 to make sure that information regarding cooling centers is available statewide, providing a location to get some relief.
