DEEP Presents the INs and OUTs of Recycling

Posted on April 22, 2022

In honor of Earth Day, State Representative Bill Pizzuto (R-71) asked Sherill Baldwin from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to host a virtual workshop to highlight the importance of recycling and to provide tips and techniques as well as answer questions from concerned residents.

The hour-long Zoom seminar discussed the “INs and OUTs” of recycling and the list of acceptable materials for Connecticut’s mixed recycling program. Ms. Baldwin shared multiple resources to guide residents, including Recyclect.com which provides a complete breakdown of materials, explains the process and has links to the RecycleCT Wizard App for your smartphone or tablet.

She also noted that recycling shouldn’t be thought of as limited to only cardboard, metal, glass, paper and plastic, and urged everyone to consider how they recycle food and food scraps.   According to the DEEP website, “The single largest component of solid waste sent to incinerators and landfills is food waste.”

“I want to thank Sherill for helping us to better understand what can and cannot be recycled easily, safely and effectively, and for providing links and information we can all use to make more informed decisions regarding the environment,” Rep. Pizzuto said.
