Rep. Pizzuto Applauds Progress on Brownfield Remediation, Redevelopment

Waterbury, Conn.—State Representative Bill Pizzuto (R-71) attended a press conference Thursday morning with Mayor Neil O’Leary to mark the start of the demolition of 170 Freight Street in Waterbury, the former Anaconda-American Brass Company site.

The state has invested heavily in this project and 170 Freight Street is the final remaining building in the Freight Street Corridor, one of the largest former industrial facilities in the region. The land has been designated for transit-oriented redevelopment given its location half a mile from the city’s downtown train station and half a mile from the I-84/Route 8 MixMaster.

“The Freight Street redevelopment will help transform the long-neglected district into a mixed-used site, back on the City’s tax rolls,” said Pizzuto. “I want to thank everyone involved in getting this project to this point. The transformation will be a herculean effort and I applaud the City and State officials, as well as the contractors doing the hard work.”

Waterbury was awarded $10 million from the state Community Investment Fund 2030 for the redevelopment project. CIF was created by 2021 legislation to foster economic development in underserved communities.

“That funding is being used for remediation of this large brownfield site and to demolish 170 Freight Street. This project will support long-term economic development and immediate construction jobs,” said Pizzuto.
