On the north steps of the Capitol in Hartford on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, State Representative John Piscopo (R-76) joined 150 legislators in the House of Representatives in being sworn in, taking the oath of office in an outdoor ceremony.

January 6, 2021 is considered Opening Day for the legislature as it marks the beginning of the 2021 legislative session that will conclude on June 9, 2021. Rep. Piscopo, who was sworn in as state representative for the 76th General Assembly District which includes Burlington, Harwinton, Litchfield and Thomaston indicated that fixing the state’s ailing budget and assisting unemployed residents and hurting businesses get back to work will be top priorities.

“I feel very fortunate to serve communities in the 76th District as state representative. Despite this legislative session being different from any year prior due to COVID-19 restrictions, there is one constant that has and will continue to dominate our legislative work – the people and businesses of this state need our help. It is my hope that the legislature will govern with common sense and leave behind habits of reckless spending and tax increases that have plagued our past,” said Rep. Piscopo.

During the day, Governor Lamont addressed House and Senate members with his State of the State speech, which touched mainly on public health and the economic struggles that continue to plague Connecticut after the effects of COVID-19.

This session, the legislature will be tasked with crafting a new two-year state budget that will fix the persistent deficits hampering economic recovery and the staggering unemployment rate.

Piscopo will serve as a member on the legislature’s Environment, Energy and Technology, Finance, Revenue, and Bonding, and Legislative Management committees.
