State Rep. John Piscopo Applauds State Grant for Nystrom’s Park

Hartford – State Rep. John Piscopo (R- Thomaston) applauds the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant for Thomaston announced last week. Administered by the state’s Office of Policy and Management (OPM), STEAP provides funding for local capital improvement projects that support economic development, encourage community conservation and improve the quality of life for residents.

“This is an exciting day for the town of Thomaston,” said Rep. Piscopo. “These funds will support much needed improvements and encourage growth of our local economy. I’m very pleased that the long awaited first phase of construction to make improvements to Nystrom’s Park, which I’ve strongly supported, will finally get underway this fall. I thank the great people of Thomaston for their continued work and vision on this project. I commend First Selectman Ed Mone and our town officials and leaders for their hard work on this grant, and their continued commitment to making Thomaston a great place to live and work.”
The town of Thomaston was awarded $500,000 for Phase 1 improvements to Nystrom’s Park. The improvements will include tennis courts, a bio basin to improve water quality in the pond, parking lot improvements, and beach improvements to include ADA accessibility.

Thomaston First Selectman Ed Mone added, “Thomaston is pleased to have received this funding toward this project. We have been requesting it for the past 5 years. This will make possible a quality of life improvement which will benefit the public at large as well as student athletes at Thomaston High School. This project would not have advanced without the State’s assistance.”
Mone also credited those involved in moving the project forward, “Chairman of the Track Committee, Mike Burr, deserves credit for his commitment to the project. The project to date has been paid for with funding raised by the Committee through fundraising events and NAA grants principally from Connecticare. We are thankful for their support.”
The engineers employed on the project are Milone & Macbroom.
Thomaston was one of 7 towns throughout Connecticut receiving a STEAP grant award announced for the purposes of funding a variety of economic development, community conservation and quality-of-life projects.
