PISCOPO WILL FIGHT PROPOSED STATE CUT TO THOMASTON

HARTFORD- State Rep., John Piscopo (R-76) today declared he will fight any proposed cut to the as Payment In Lieu of Taxes Manufacturing Machinery and Equipment, or PILOT MME.
The governor’s proposed budget recommends eliminating a program that reimburses towns for not levying taxes on manufacturing machinery and equipment. The 20-year-old program is known as Payment In Lieu of Taxes Manufacturing Machinery and Equipment, or (PILOT MME).
“I was proud to support this bi-partisan concept in the mid 90’s which provided relief for our manufacturers. I was quite disturbed to see that that the credit is cut in Governor Malloy’s proposed budget,” said Thomaston State Rep. Piscopo.
Many legislators at the State Capitol were equally concerned about the elimination of $47.9 million in MME PILOT funds and questioned Malloy’s budget chief Ben Barnes on this issue at length during a budget briefing in the Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee two weeks ago.
At that hearing, Rep. Piscopo specifically brought up the cut to Thomaston in questioning to Secretary Barnes. According the proposal, if the PILOT MME is cut, Thomaston would lose approximately $315,000. This is the largest single grant that the town receives from the state.”
Rep. Piscopo added, “I was glad Thomaston’s First Selectman Edmond Mone also brought this lose of PILOT money up during questioning in a subsequent meeting. We need to work together to fight any cut in this payment, a cut that would devastate our town.”
“I was encouraged to hear and read the Governor will be looking at an avenue for reimbursement, Secretary Barnes has said he would look for ways to make sure there aren’t any towns that are losers. Jobs must be a top priority. Manufacturing is a valuable contributor to the economy, which in turn spawns many other service sector jobs. We must preserve Connecticut manufacturing. Manufacturing is one of the most important pillars in the history of our state and into our future,’ concluded Rep. Piscopo.
