HARTFORD – State Rep. John Piscopo (R-76) testified before the Transportation Committee during Monday’s Public Hearing in support of his proposal to strengthen the state’s “Move Over” law. All vehicles are required to safely move over to an open lane when they see emergency vehicles on the side of the highway.

In 2019, the legislature expanded the law to include non-emergency vehicles, such as tow trucks. Piscopo’s concept seeks to strengthen the law’s existing language by including state routes and access highways, which are often two-lane roads embedded in Connecticut’s municipalities.
“This bill gives our first responders another tool in their toolbox to ensure safety when conducting roadside investigations or services. Our drivers do a great job of leaving room for our first responders to do their jobs, but there are ways to improve. Drivers should always be in the habit of moving over, regardless if these incidences are occurring on I-84 or Route 4,” said Piscopo.
The committee will now consider the comments made on the legislation before it takes further action. For the concept to move forward, it must be favorably voted out of the committee by Monday, March 20.
