Piscopo Op-Ed: Update on Bipartisan Task Force

Hello Friends,
In an effort to keep you updated, I wanted to share with you the latest information regarding the Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety.
As most of you are aware, the horrible tragedy in Newtown resulted in the formation of this Bipartisan Task Force by the State Legislature last month. The goal of its members is to develop recommendations designed to reduce gun violence, enhance school safety and increase access to mental health care. Three Sub Committees were formed to address each of these subject areas. A series of public hearings were held at the Legislative Office Building over the last two weeks. Democratic and Republican legislative leaders along with municipal leaders, officials, professionals and the public from around the state participated as the Working Groups on School Safety, Mental Health, and Gun Violence Prevention, each held informational and public hearings as part of the process to hear testimony on all sides of these important issues.
A final public hearing was held at Newtown High School on January 30. The full, 52-member Bipartisan Task Force panel heard emotional testimony from victims’ families, first responders and public officials.
With the public hearing process now complete, each of the three Working Groups will compile a report of their findings in the coming weeks to be submitted to legislative leaders of the Task Force by February 15.
This is a complex, multi-systemic issue, and we are all in search for answers. It has brought about strong opinions from the people of our state on a number of issues. I will continue to work with my colleagues here in the State Legislature, to bring about common sense solutions for our District, and our State.
