Piscopo Op-Ed: Unintended Economic Consequences of Proposed Legislation

Since this country’s inception, Connecticut has been a leader in manufacturing. We must preserve this legacy of Yankee ingenuity. When government sends signals, through proposals or action that is perceived as unfriendly to business, we fall prey to competition from other States or countries.
I’ve always known that Connecticut was a leader in firearm manufacturing, but was enlightened by the number of companies that were represented and employees that came to Hartford to testify on a proposed gun bill.
Not only the owners and executives came but the workers, many of them union members, showed support in large numbers. It emphasized the point that proposals on products made in this State can have serious economic repercussions, not only on our businesses, but also on the people they employ.
Connecticut is currently considering legislation that would ban semi-automatic and certain hunting rifles. The economic impact of this proposed legislation on manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers would affect Connecticut in several ways.
The Firearms Industry directly employs 2,899 people and another 4,441 indirectly. With an unemployment rate of almost 9 percent, the loss of the firearms industry will further impact the people of our state.
Not only are jobs created by the industry, but also, tax revenue is generated. Over $119 million in state taxes was paid by the industry and its employees. In a state that is already in fiscal crisis, we cannot afford this lost revenue.
In addition, the industry was responsible for over $1.75 billion in economic activity. This underscores that manufacturing facilities support smaller manufacturers and other business activity throughout our State. We must keep this in mind as one of the many unintended consequences that happen when we consider bans or limits on products or substances.
Manufacturers are a primary contributor to the economy. In my entire tenure as your State Representative, I have always stressed the need to maintain, stimulate, and attract business to this State. I will do my best to continue to work toward that end.
