Piscopo, Martin Celebrate Harwinton Senior Center’s 20th Anniversary

HARWINTON – State Rep. John Piscopo (R-76) and State Sen. Henri Martin (R-31) joined Harwinton First Selectman Michael Criss, former First Selectwoman Marie Knudsen, members of the Commission on Aging, and honored guests to mark the Harwinton Senior Center’s 20th Anniversary. The legislators presented Senior Center Director Sharlene Copeland with a citation on behalf of the Connecticut General Assembly in recognition and celebration of the anniversary milestone.

“I congratulate the Harwinton Senior Center on 20 fantastic years of serving the seniors in our community, said Rep Piscopo. “It improves the quality of life for residents in any community when there is a place where people can gather together, be it urban, suburban, or rural. It is important that people are able to come together and support each other at this great center, whether it’s for fun celebration, to meet and share ideas, or to help those who may be in need.”

“Today marks two decades that the center has been improving the quality of life for Harwinton seniors,” Sen. Martin said. “May the next two decades be even more successful.”

Harwinton First Selectman Michael Criss also presented an official town proclamation in recognition of the center’s anniversary. Criss said, “The Harwinton Senior Center is my second home. I thank you for always making me feel welcome and I assure you we are fully committed to the future of our seniors. Special thanks to Sharlene Copeland and Suzanne Stich for making this facility thrive for our seniors, and to Marie Knudsen for her foresight so many years ago.”
Guests attending the anniversary celebration were treated to a sing along with the HarwinTONEs, accompanied by Faye Engle on piano and Jeannette Asselin on guitar.
Suzanne Stich, Recreation Director for the Town of Harwinton added, “I’m so thankful for everyone who came to today’s wonderful celebration. Many of our members have been here from the very beginning. It’s an honor to be able to be here and to be affiliated with all of these wonderful people. That’s what makes this senior center such a special place.”
The original dedication was on May 19, 1996. For more information on the Harwinton Senior Center, please contact Senior Center Director Sharlene Copeland at (860) 689-1951.
