Piscopo Listens to Residents, Businesses on Proposed Tax Increases

HARTFORD – State Representative John Piscopo (R-76) joined Republican members of the legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee in holding a public hearing on the Democrat proposed budget in the Legislative Office Building, May 11. One hundred Connecticut residents testified and over 800 residents submitted written testimony against the proposed budget, which would increase taxes by approximately $2 billion.
The majority party Democrats on the Finance committee refused to hold a public hearing on almost all of the proposed tax hikes during the committee process. Rep. Piscopo, a member of the Finance committee, said the Republicans held the public hearing to give the residents and taxpayers of Connecticut the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns.
“When lawmakers start taking the approach that they can pass any bill they want without the residents of Connecticut having their say, we are sidestepping transparency and open government, and I do not support that” said Rep. Piscopo, Senior Republican Whip. “People are frustrated and they are hurting financially, and the last thing that this state legislature should be doing is raising taxes on people who are already feeling squeezed and living paycheck to paycheck. I voted against the tax increase package when it came for a vote in the Finance committee and I will continue to vote against any tax increase proposals on the House floor.”
More than two dozen services would be subject to the full sales tax including accounting, veterinary, engineering and drafting, dry cleaning and laundry (excluding coin-operated), golf courses, and interior design.
“When our small businesses continue to raise the flag and warn that we are taxing them out of business, lawmakers need to listen. They are the backbone of our local economy and our job creators. In our proposed Republican budget, we have proven that there are ways to balance the state’s budget without raising any new taxes or cutting services for the neediest among us.”
