Piscopo Lauds Thomaston Designation as Business-Friendly Enterprise Zone

HARTFORD – State Rep. John Piscopo (R-76) applauds the CT General Assembly for passing his landmark bill, which supports economic growth and development in the town of Thomaston.
The legislation, which passed as part of the state budget implementer on May 7th, will now allow for the town of Thomaston to be designated an enterprise zone.
“I could not be more thrilled for the town of Thomaston, its residents, and the surrounding community. For more than 20 years, I have continued to propose and champion this legislation in the CT General Assembly,” said Rep. Piscopo. “By attracting new business to the area, stimulating economic growth, and creating jobs, Thomaston will continue to offer its residents and business community alike, a great place to work, to live, and to raise their families.”
Businesses currently located in, or relocating to an enterprise zone qualify for a series of tax breaks, which allow businesses to maintain their capital, and reinvest back into the business, leading to further growth, more jobs, and an expanding economy.
Rep. Piscopo acknowledged the support of Thomaston First Selectman Ed Mone, who testified alongside Piscopo in support of this legislation before the Commerce Committee during a public hearing earlier this year. “First Selectman Mone has been a strong advocate of this legislation for years. I’d like to express my sincerest thanks to him for all he’s done, in speaking with local leaders in neighboring communities to urge support for this measure.”
“As First Selectman of the Town of Thomaston, I couldn’t be happier about finally receiving Enterprise Zone Status for our Town. This status will create opportunity for our local businesses and industry to expand within our community with the assistance of the State of Connecticut. We have long sought this designation and I thank Representative Piscopo for his efforts in gaining this designation for Thomaston,” said Selectman Mone.
Piscopo added, “This important legislation is a clear signal that Thomaston is open for business. The designation as an enterprise zone will bolster our local economy and make us more competitive with our neighboring towns who are members of existing enterprise zones.”
Prior to the legislation, Thomaston did not belong to an enterprise zone but was surrounded by towns that do. The Naugatuck Valley, Waterbury, and Bristol are designated enterprise zones. This designation will make Thomaston a competitive player in bidding for new and expanding businesses looking to move to the area.
The legislation now awaits signature by Governor Dannel P. Malloy.
Rep. Piscopo represents the 76th District in the Connecticut General Assembly.
