NORTHFIELD – State Representative John Piscopo (R-76) recently joined First Selectman Leo Paul, Fire Chief Michael Berry, Sr., local officials and guests alongside Northfield Volunteer Fire Company (VFC) members to celebrate the Housing Ceremony for the Company’s new Engine Tanker #2.
“Today is a great day for the Northfield Volunteer Fire Company, the firefighters, and the residents they serve,” said Rep. Piscopo. “It is important that the brave men and women who answered the call to voluntarily serve our community have the best equipment to help them do their jobs safely and successfully, including fire engines. I proudly join in welcoming Engine Tanker #2 to its new Northfield home.”
The housing ceremony is a fire service tradition that is held to welcome and put into service, new fire apparatus. The history of the ceremony dates back to the era where horse-drawn carts served as vehicles of the time period, including use for firefighting. The horses were unable to back the carts into the barn upon their return from responding to calls for assistance; the Firemen were relied on to push the carts back into the barn by hand.
