BURLINGTON – State Representative John Piscopo (R-76) applauded the decision by the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation (CT Trust) to award $13,000 in grant funding to assist with restoration and refurbishing efforts of the Congregational Church of Burlington. The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation grant programs are supported by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) with funds from the Community Investment Act.

Piscopo wrote a letter last December in support of the church’s project application submitted to CT Trust for the maintenance and repair grant.

“The Congregational Church of Burlington is not only a historical landmark, but it also continues to enrich the town’s landscape as well as the lives of those who live and work here,” said Rep. Piscopo. “The Church adds to the esthetics of the town while providing a sense of community and I wholeheartedly support the restoration efforts to ensure that this beautiful building will remain an important part of the fabric of the community for years to come.”

A significant exterior and interior painting and preservation project is underway. The $80,000 project will repair and preserve the church steeple, windows and exterior facade as well as the interior tin ceiling in the Chapel Room. Grants available by the CT Trust will help to subsidize the project.

“I would like to thank the legislators for their support of our application, and, the support they provide the community organizations they represent such as ours. It is much appreciated and the $13,000 will certainly assist in defraying the cost of our paint project,” said Maryann Burns, who serves as the church’s Moderator.

The Congregational Church of Burlington was established in 1774. The church’s current location in Burlington’s historic town center was built in 1836.  The building is depicted on the town seal.
