November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Did you know that people with diabetes are at greater risk of developing heart disease? To help individuals with diabetes learn more about specific risk factors associated with heart disease, the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) is promoting “Be Smart About Your Heart: Control the ABCs of Diabetes”.
In addition to working with your doctor, a good self-care plan has also been effective in helping many people avoid the long-term problems of diabetes.
The following are some tips from NDCP to help keep diabetes under control:
*A balanced meal plan that includes health food choices
such as fruits and vegetables, fish, lean meats, chicken
or turkey without the skin, dry peas or beans, whole
grains, and low-fat or skim milk and cheese.
*Eat foods that have less fat and salt.
*Eat foods with more fiber such as whole grains cereals,
breads, crackers, rice, or pasta.
*30 to 60 minutes of physical activity, such as brisk
walking, on most days of the week.
*Find positive ways to cope with stress. Stress can raise
blood glucose (blood sugar).
*Report any changes in your eyesight to your doctor.
