    The Social Security Administration (SSA), a federal agency with local bureaus, is temporarily suspending its walk-in service at the 147 Litchfield Street location in Torrington, beginning Oct. 30, for office renovations. The SSA expects to reopen its doors in Torrington in early 2015.

    What this means for you:

    If you are affected by the temporary suspension of walk-in service, the SSA’s local phone service remains active and can be reached at (877) 405-0486.

    Most business can be handled through the toll-free number, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, at (800) 772-1213 or anytime at www.socialsecurity.gov.

    Through the SSA website, you can:

    • Create a free personal online My Social Security      account;
    • File for retirement, disability, spouse’s benefits and/      or Medicare;
    • Change an address or phone number, if you receive      monthly benefits;
    • Sign-up for direct deposit of Social Security benefits;
    • Request replacement Medicare cards or request a benefit      verification letter.

    If you do prefer in-person business with the SSA, there are other regional offices in Connecticut. They include:

    Waterbury SSA Office

    51 N. Elm St., Suite 1

    Waterbury, CT 06702

    New Britain SSA Office

    Danbury SSA Office
