I-84 Traffic Alert This Weekend, 6/27-30

I wanted to alert you to an upcoming bridge replacement and closure of I-84 in Southington for the weekend of June 27-30th which might affect your upcoming travel plans. Please consider avoiding this area or allowing plenty of extra travel time as lane closures, road closures and detours will be necessary.

I-84 will be CLOSED in both directions from Friday, June 27, at 9:00 p.m. through Monday, June 30, at 5:00 a.m., requiring motorists to get off the highway at Exit 30, Marion Avenue, and immediately get back on the highway on the on-ramp there. The rain date for this bridge replacement closure will be July 11-13th.

MAJOR TRAFFIC DELAYS ARE ANTICIPATED! – MOTORISTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PLAN AHEAD, AVOID THE AREA, AND TO SEEK ALTERNATIVE ROUTES!

Additionally, a weekend closure of Marion Avenue in the vicinity of the bridges will be required. For those of you with family, activities or business in that area, Marion Avenue traffic will be detoured along local roads while I-84 traffic will be maintained along the ramps as well as detoured along I-691 and Route 9.

The existing bridges, built in 1963, are situated near Exit 30 on I-84 and carry 3 lanes of traffic in both the eastbound and westbound directions. After 51-years of service, their replacement is a priority.

The proposed construction will be performed using rapid reconstruction methods, which require closing I-84 over a weekend and moving prefabricated superstructures from staging areas into final positions using specialized equipment.
