In an effort to keep you informed, I wanted to let you know about an opportunity for middle school students to participate in the statewide Veterans Parade Essay Contest.  The focus of the project is to encourage students to learn more about the heroism and importance of American servicemen and women throughout our nation’s history.

All Connecticut students in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade for the 2014-2015 school year are eligible to participate in the contest.  This year’s topic is “I Want to Say THANK YOU to a Veteran Because…”.

The deadline for essay submissions is Friday, September 26, 2014.

The winner will ride in a special vehicle in the 15th Annual Connecticut Veterans Parade on Sunday, November 2, 2014 in Hartford, and will be recognized at a ceremony in the Hall of Flags at the CT State Capitol on Wednesday, October 29, 2014.

For further information or an application, please call (860) 653-4484 or visit:

The contest is co-sponsored by the Navy League of the United States-Hartford Council and the State of CT Department of Veterans Affairs.
