76th District Volunteer Fire Departments Awarded Volunteer Fire Capacity Grants

HARTFORD – According to State Representative John Piscopo (R-Thomaston), three local volunteer fire departments have been selected to receive 2024 Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Grants, administered through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Division of Forestry in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service.
These grants are designed to support rural fire departments by enhancing their ability to respond to fire-related emergencies through improved equipment, training, and safety measures.
Awarded departments include:
- East Litchfield Volunteer Fire Company (Litchfield) – Grant funding will be used to purchase turnout gear, ensuring firefighters are properly protected during emergency responses.
- Harwinton West Side Volunteer Fire Department (Harwinton) – Funding will be allocated for new personal protective equipment (PPE) and turnout gear to improve firefighter safety and operational readiness.
- Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department (Thomaston) – Grant support will provide for new hose, turnout gear, and Firefighter II training to enhance service capabilities and technical preparedness.
“These grants represent a critical investment in the safety, training, and resilience of our local fire services,” said Piscopo. “Our volunteer firefighters are the backbone of public safety in our communities, and this funding directly supports their mission to protect lives and property.”
The Volunteer Fire Capacity Grant Program is part of an ongoing federal-state partnership aimed at strengthening fire suppression efforts in communities with populations under 10,000. Grants are awarded competitively based on demonstrated need and proposed impact.
The 76th District extends its sincere gratitude to the dedicated men and women of the East Litchfield, Harwinton West Side, and Thomaston fire departments. Their continued service exemplifies the highest standards of commitment and community spirit.
