The fully affordable 100-unit complex is a “landmark” for New Canaan as it combats an affordable housing shortage.

NEW CANAAN – On July 25th, State Representative Tom O’Dea (R-125) joined Governor Lamont, fellow New Canaan state lawmakers, local elected officials, industry leaders in finance and development, and community members to celebrate the re-opening of Canaan Parish – New Canaan’s newly renovated affordable housing complex.

Located on Lakeview Ave, the 100-unit complex features state-of-the-art accommodations at a fixed affordable rate geared towards seniors, families, and young professionals.

“This development is a positive for our town, but it highlights a greater issue in Connecticut: a diminished affordable housing stock and restrictive state statutes. The success of Canaan Parish should serve as a model for future success in generating truly affordable housing in Fairfield County,” Rep. O’Dea said.

The 100-unit complex features updated accessibility options, maximized green space, modernized common areas including a playground and basketball courts, and 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments for rent. Read more about it here: https://www.canaanparish.org/

Canaan Parish existed as a dilapidated 60-unit complex built in the 1970’s prior to an ambitious undertaking of a full-scale renovation almost one decade ago. Collaboration between state and local officials, as well as with dedicated advocacy groups and residents, helped generate a plan to nearly double the access to affordable housing on-site.

The project relied on these strong collaborative efforts, creative funding initiatives, like New Canaan’s affordable housing fund started almost 20 years ago, which injected almost $700,000 to jumpstart the development.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in this landmark project for our community and to those that joined us at Canaan Parish on Tuesday.
