Tolland’s Newly Elected Nuccio Appointed to Legislative Committee Assignments

TOLLAND — Newly-elected State Representative Tammy Nuccio (R-53) received her committee assignments this week, which are effective 2021-2023. Nuccio was elected to her first term in November and is eager to begin serving the residents and businesses of the 53rd Assembly District, which is comprised of Tolland, Ashford, and Willington. The Tolland native and freshman state Republican lawmaker will serve on the Finance, Insurance, and Commerce Committees. In addition, she will also be seated on the House Screening Committee, a select committee which reviews all pending legislation before it reaches the chamber.
Nuccio plans to work hard to overcome what she says is a “culture of divisiveness” in Hartford that stands in the way of much-needed policy changes. “Our system of checks and balances in Connecticut can’t function without compromise, and right now on practically every issue, the mentality is that it’s ‘us versus them’,” said Nuccio. “We can’t ever hope to make utilities more affordable, make taxation more reasonable, or rebuild our infrastructure without consensus building.”
Nuccio, a senior financial analyst for Cigna and Chairwoman of the Tolland Town Council, will apply her previous experiences to her committee work within the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee. “The pandemic has only made it that much more glaringly obvious how unsustainable this level of spending and public debt is for our balance sheet. Most Americans can’t afford a $500 emergency, and the Connecticut state government is no different, and we act like we can keep borrowing the money forever,” Nuccio said. “Herb Stein probably put it best: ‘If something can’t go on forever, it will stop.'”
In addition to her role within the Finance Committee, Nuccio will join the Insurance and Real Estate Committee, which has cognizance of all matters relating to insurance law and real estate law. She will also join the Commerce Committee, which focuses its attention on making Connecticut a more attractive place to live and work.
Nuccio is slated to be sworn-in to her new role as State Representative when the legislature convenes on January 6, 2021.
