UNCASVILLE – On Saturday, February 25, 2017 State Representative Kathleen McCarty (R-Waterford & Montville) joined State Senators Osten and Formica in meeting with individuals from Southeastern Connecticut’s Intellectual and Developmental Disability (I/DD) Support Community.

The legislative family forum – which took place just weeks after Governor Malloy released his budget proposal that cuts $25 million in funding to the Department of Developmental Services in FY 2018 – was hosted by the family advocacy group called Our Families Can’t Wait. Issues discussed at the event largely revolved around the need to: increase the availability of respite care for families caring for loved ones at home, specialize dental care, and fund for new graduates over the age of 21. Many parents shared personal, and emotional, stories with the legislators on what these changes would mean to them and their families.

Rep. McCarty, who is a strong advocate for mental health and ID/D services, continues to fight for good policies that will help secure funding for those who need it most in our community.
