Letter to the Editor from Senators Paul Formica and Heather Somers and Representatives Devin Carney, Holly Cheeseman, Mike France, Kathleen McCarty, and Jesse MacLachlan.

Connecticut needs to take bold action to fix our transportation system. Better transportation is a key to economic development, job growth and better quality of life.

At the same time, residents are struggling. They have been asked to pay increasingly more in taxes while services have been cut. The state keeps taking more, and providing less.

Connecticut has to change. Creating a new way to tax people through tolls is not the answer. Connecticut needs to prioritize.

WATERFORD — Since being elected into office, State Representative Kathleen McCarty (R-38) has truly fought tirelessly organizing informational meetings, circulating legislative petitions, writing letters to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and educating fellow legislators about the importance of protecting Millstone from a premature closing. Such a retirement would have jeopardized 1,500 Connecticut jobs, approximately 30 million dollars to Waterford’s tax base, and increased energy and capacity costs by approximately $8 billion. Therefore, at a press conference held yesterday at the facility, Rep. McCarty joined Millstone and other government officials – including Governor Lamont, Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Commissioner Katie Dykes – in celebrating the recently settled contract that keeps Millstone open for at least another 10 years.

HARTFORD — State Representative Kathleen McCarty (R-38) was recently named a “Legislative Champion for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities by the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services’ Council on Developmental Disabilities’ (DDS) first legislative breakfast in Hartford.

Only four individuals, including Rep. McCarty, from the Legislature received this award. It recognizes their staunch advocacy for family members of individuals with disabilities.

“I am so honored to receive this recognition,” said Rep. McCarty, who has also received leadership awards from the Eastern Connecticut Regional Mental Health Board for her hard work and dedication to closing the gaps in mental health services across the state. “I understand the hardships that Connecticut residents face when advocating for care for their loved ones with disabilities. I will continue doing my best to increase access to quality care for all.”
