Today, I joined Attorney General Tong, Rep. David Rutigliano (R-123), House Ranking Member of the General Law Committee, Sen. Maroney, Rep. Lemar, and Rep. Rader to announce a new legislative proposal to combat youth social media addiction.
With the incredible proliferation of social media accounts and apps, protecting children from the dangers and addictions of some of these platforms is more important than ever. With the mental health of our children as a top priority, we need to take action.
Several of us proposed separate bills to address this situation, and many of those concepts will be included in a larger bill being discussed in a public hearing today.
The proposed legislation – HB 6857 – would “prohibit social media companies from exposing minors to harmful and addictive algorithms and notifications without parental consent.” It would also “establish a series of default settings regarding account privacy, time of use and notifications, including barring notifications between midnight and 6 a.m. and limiting social media use to one hour per-day.”
