Congressman Himes, Rep. Marra, Norwalk Delegation Announce $14 Million for Safer Streets in Norwalk

Today, Representative Jim Himes (CT-04) announced that the Norwalk Redevelopment Agency will receive a $14,000,000 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant for the MLK Corridor Equitable Mobility Enhancement Project.

“This $14 million will be transformational for Southwestern Connecticut—creating safer, cleaner, and more accessible thoroughfares for the people of Norwalk,” said Congressman Jim Himes. “The MLK Corridor Equitable Mobility Enhancement Project is the exact type of endeavor we hoped to support when we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law last year, and I look forward to continued work with the federal and state delegations to make travel through our communities easier for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.”

The RAISE grant will fund the construction of the 33-acre area surrounding the South Norwalk Train Station, including a two-mile stretch of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The roadway reconfiguration will include accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians, improved signage updated with real-time transit data, and advanced drainage and landscaping.

“Smart investments in infrastructure to make our roadways safer and improve accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users will benefit the entire community and I look forward to seeing this redesigned section of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive,” State Rep. Tracy Marra, a member of the legislature’s Transportation Committee, said.

“This grant directly ties into significant state funding in the area. By investing at all three levels of government directly where people live, we can benefit thousands of lives, beautify our city, and support our community, continuing to focus on advancing safety, housing, business and education. Thanks to Congressman Himes, Senator Murphy, and Senator Blumenthal for their great work in delivering this project for Norwalk,” said State Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff.

“This funding will help transform the South Norwalk Train Station and the area that surrounds it. The changes will make the station safer, more accessible, and easier to navigate. I am thrilled that our city will receive this funding and am thankful for those who worked tirelessly to secure it,” said State Rep. Kadeem Roberts.

“This grant is great news for those who have been fighting to create a more equitable Norwalk. Thank you to Congressman Himes and the Federal delegation for investing in our community to make it more accessible so that residents can use as many modes of transportation as possible. Once complete, this project will allow individuals to travel around the area safely and efficiently by foot, bicycle, and transit. I am grateful for the funding and can’t wait to see how the project improves the city,” said State Rep. Dominique Johnson.
