Chili for Charity!

Swapping legislative meetings in Hartford for light-hearted conversation and a chance to taste local, homemade chili was an easy, and delicious, decision for State Rep. Tracy Marra who served as a guest judge for the inaugural “Men’s Chili Cook-Off” hosted by the First Congregational Church in Darien.
The promotional flyers asked contestants and spectators to “bring your appetites and scorecards as the gentlemen of FCC bring their tastiest recipes for the all-family Sunday Supper” and the results were nothing less than fantastic for all who attended.
The charity fundraising event was held in the parish hall and featured about a dozen contestants vying for the honorary title. Judges Reverend Anthony Weisman, nursery school Coordinator Krista Guarini and State Rep. Tracy Marra had the enviable task of trying each of the delicious recipes.
“I know there’s a lot of debate about the right and wrong way to make chili, but the differences from one recipe to the next were incredible and I’m definitely going to incorporate some of their tricks and techniques into the next batch I make,” Rep. Marra said.
Dozens of hungry spectators – or are they “taste-tators”? – enjoyed samples that ranged from traditional fantastic chilis and stews to the award-winning braised beef mac-n-cheese, pasta carbonara, and oh yes, cookie pie!
The event also featured games and activities for children.
