    DARIEN — For the family-owned Grieb’s Pharmacy, a Darien institution for 78 years, the past few years brought any number of challenges, from the front lines of the pandemic to two break-ins in a span of three weeks in 2023.

    Yet it was a seemingly run-of-the-mill audit in December 2023 that nearly killed the business Debi Hibben has run for more than 40 years.

    Under the state’s audit procedures, the Department of Social Services determined the pharmacy owed back three quarters of its Medicaid claims over two years. The total cost was $705,000, high enough to put them out of business several times over.

    The cause for the penalty wasn’t any kind of fraud, according to the pharmacy, but rather a missed email with devastating consequences.

    “We’ve weathered a lot of storms here, a lot of crises” Hibben said. “This was probably the biggest thing we’ve ever faced.”
