Norwich Tech Legislative Visit

Earlier this month, I started the new year by visiting Norwich Tech with some of my fellow legislators from the eastern Connecticut delegation. We had the opportunity to tour this very impressive high school and interact with some of the students who attend.

Some highlights included visiting the HVAC, automotive, and electrical classes. These students receive the hands-on training they need to be ready for employment right out of high school, learning both in the classroom and out in the field.

Here is a full list of the trades offered at Norwich Tech:

• Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing

• Automotive Technology

• Carpentry

• Culinary Arts

• Electrical

• Hairdressing and Cosmetology

• Health Technology

• Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

• Information Technology

• Manufacturing / Precision Machining Technology

• Plumbing and Heating

• Welding and Metal Fabrication

All students begin by experiencing each of the shop classes, and then narrow their focus as their educational journey continues. Students participate in both traditional academic and shop classes, which rotate every two weeks, giving a nice balance to their learning experience.

Their programs are designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment through apprenticeship programs or for admission to two‑ or four‑year colleges.

Here are some other facts about this impressive facility right here in eastern Connecticut:

• It serves almost 700 students in grades 9–12.

• Students come from over 49 different towns.

• The school is part of the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System.

• Each student graduates with both a high school diploma and a certificate in their chosen career-technical field.
