Celebrating Read Across America in the 45th District

It really doesn’t get any better than this! What a fun few days celebrating Read Across America in the 45th District!

I had a fantastic time visiting schools in Gales Ferry, Griswold, Preston, and Voluntown.

I started off the day at Voluntown Elementary School, where I read to Mrs. Weir’s 2nd Grade class! The children enjoyed “The Cat in the Hat,” and it was the best way to start off my day.

From there, it was off to Veterans’ Memorial School in Preston, where I read “We’re All Wonders,” to Miss Maciniak’s second grade class. The students enjoyed the book, and we had a great conversation.  We then headed to Miss Golemba’s second grade class where we celebrated Dr Suess once again, with a reading of “Are You My Mother?”

At Griswold Elementary School, I read “Do Not Open the Box,” to Ms. Wilbur’s second grade class in their impressive library.

In Gales Ferry, I read to Rosie Revere Engineer to Mrs. Mason’s and Mrs. Craig’s first and second grade classes at Juliet Long Elementary School. The book was based on how women and girls are just as capable of preforming well in occupations that have historically been male dominated and to never give up on your dreams. It was inspired by Rosie the Riveter. We can do it!

At the end of all readings, the class engaged with me in spirited discussions about what was important to them, what my job entailed as a state representative, and friendly conversation in general. The children I had a chance to read to today were kind, smart beyond their years, and really cared about each other.
