HARTFORD – Governor Malloy recently presented his budget proposals to legislators in both the House and Senate in a joint session. State Representative David Labriola (R-131), who was in attendance to receive the plan, considers its ideas disappointing and unacceptable.

“This budget will result in dramatic property tax increases for residents across the State of Connecticut,” said Rep. Labriola. “It is clear that this plan was crafted without logic or common sense. I am strongly opposed to Governor Malloy’s budget proposal and look forward to standing with my like-minded colleagues to present a common sense response to our fiscal crisis.”

The governor’s proposal includes a $200 million tax hike by eliminating the $200 tax credit for property owners, and shifts $400 million in teacher pension payments (about a third of the total cost) to municipalities. Towns will be required to build in the additional cost to their budgets, which will result in property tax increases. Additionally, the proposal unfairly shifts the burden of Connecticut’s deficit onto our municipalities through the Education Cost Sharing (ECS) formula.
