HARTFORDState Representatives Rosa C. Rebimbas (R-70) and David Labriola (R-131) during a late night vote in the House on Thursday applauded passage of a bill to help Naugatuck by validating the borough’s grand list assessment with the state.

H.B. 6942 – An Act Validating the Action of a Municipal Assessor, effectively extends the state filing deadline of the borough’s grand list assessment after the borough missed the original state deadline.

According to the language of the bill, “The grand list for the assessment year commencing October 1, 2014, as signed by the assessor of the town of Naugatuck on March 31, 2015, is hereby validated notwithstanding the assessor’s failure to publish or lodge for public inspection such grand list or abstract related thereto within the time period specified in section 12-55 of the general statutes or any extension thereof granted by the chief executive officer pursuant to section 12-117 of the general statutes.”

“This legislation keeps Naugatuck within state parameters regarding grand lists assessments and allows the borough to continue operating without penalty or delay,” Rep. Rebimbas said. “I’m pleased we were able to facilitate this request on behalf of Mayor Mezzo and to make sure the borough is in compliance going forward.”

“As an introducer of this bill, I’m pleased that the House of Representatives passed it unanimously,” Rep. Labriola said. “We were able to work in a bipartisan manner to benefit the taxpayers of Naugatuck through this important piece of legislation.”

Municipalities occasionally miss state grand list filing deadlines for various reasons, and an amendment to this bill added the towns of Durham, North Branford and Windsor.

The bill passed the House unanimously at 11:20 p.m. with a vote of 145-0. It now moves to the Senate to await action. The legislative session adjourns at midnight on Wednesday, June 3rd.

Rebimbas represents the 70th district of Naugatuck.

Labriola represents the 131st district of Naugatuck, Oxford, and Southbury.
