    Unemployment Fraud on the Rise

    Unemployment Fraud on the Rise

HARTFORD – The state’s Department of Labor is reporting an increase in fraudulent unemployment claims, a problem affecting both employers and residents who are receiving notices that benefit claims have been filed in their names.

The department’s Integrity Unit is a source for assistance, and it’s important that if you’re an employer, that you let staff know right away if you’ve been linked to a fraudulent claim.

According to the DOL, many people don’t realize they are a victim of ID theft until they start getting notices about accounts being set up in their name that they did not apply for; in some cases, that notification may be from the Connecticut Department of Labor in the form of a Monetary Determination letter or a 1099 tax form. If you receive this notice, but didn’t file for unemployment, it needs to be reported.
