Rep. Foncello Testifies In Support of Bill Advocated For by Brookfield Residents

Posted on March 11, 2024

Hartford, Conn. – During the March 8, 2024, meeting of the Environment Committee, Rep. Martin Foncello (R-107) testified in support of SB 198 An Act Establishing Local Representation on the Connecticut Siting Council for Local Project.

“The issues surrounding this bill is of huge importance to my district and my constituency. Brookfield residents specifically have been critical and troubled over the vast expansion of 5G and similar technology without having any input on what is happening to their community. They have expressed their frustration that our community is becoming inundated with towers at various numerous sites, elevations and heights and there does not appear to be any plan or limit,” said Foncello.

A similar bill on local Representation was passed last year but was vetoed by Governor Lamont. Brookfield residents have spoken out to officials locally but have lobbied for the state to take action.

“Since we don’t have clear scientific evidence to substantiate nor deny the health risks caused by radiation emitted from these structures, residents have also been sounding the alarm of the potential impact on health,” said Foncello.

Foncello believes local control is important, including what is built near their homes, schools, and workplaces.

“Residents often feel that they get overlooked, unprotected, and not represented. Local communities should be able to protect their local ordinances that reflect local values. Unelected individuals who are not from the community may hold conflicts of interest, or partnerships with corporations which influence decisions related to siting projects,” said Foncello.

During the meeting, Foncello also provided testimony in support of SB 197 An Act Concerning the Availability of Certain Butcher Operations Within the State. This was advocated for by a Newtown farmer.
