Brookfield—with the Independence Day holiday coming up, State Representative Martin Foncello (R-107) encouraged people to celebrate safely. Only sparklers and fountains are legal for use in Connecticut. They are not technically considered fireworks but can only be used by people 16 years and older. Things like party poppers, snakes and smoke devices are not legal.

Some safety tips from the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department and Department of Consumer Protection include:

    • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning devices
    • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby
    • Douse the spent device with plenty of water before discarding the device
    • Never place any part of your body directly over a device when lighting the fuse
    • Never point or throw sparklers at anyone
    • Never use devices while impaired by alcohol or drugs
