Rep. Foncello, Bethel Legislative Delegation Present Citation to Special Olympian

Bethel—A Bethel resident who won medals in the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany has been recognized in her hometown, including a citation presentation by members of the state legislative delegation. State Representative Martin Foncello (R-107) and State Senator Tony Hwang (R-28) presented a citation to Kelly Schneider on Friday, July 7. The 27-year-old has been involved with New Milford Special Olympics for nearly two decades and was invited by Special Olympics Connecticut to complete in unified bowling in the world games held last month.
“I want to congratulate Kelly on her achievements. Her dedication and hard work are an inspiration and I applaud her outstanding performance on the world stage,” said Foncello.
This was the first time New Milford Special Olympics competed internationally. The local chapter has about 50 members. Schneider earned a fifth-place ribbon in the singles competition; she and Ashford-resident Deborah Albers won a bronze medal in the doubles competition; and a gold medal in the teams competition, bowling with athletes from Connecticut and Massachusetts.
“Kelly’s accomplishments on an international stage representing the United States of America are inspiring to all of us,” said Sen. Hwang. “Her commitment and dedication to showcasing her abilities and representing our country has made Bethel proud. She truly is a role model, and we also recognize Kelly’s family for their active community involvement in Special Olympics. It really does ‘take a village’ in the form of community support in order for inspiring success stories like Kelly’s to become reality.”
“The mission of Special Olympics Connecticut–providing year-round sports training—is laudable and I was pleased to be able to help recognize one of these outstanding athletes. The nonprofit inspires inclusion, understanding and respect for people of all abilities on and beyond the playing field,” added Foncello.
Bethel First Responders organized a short parade from the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department to the Municipal Center, where the citation was presented.
