Hartford—State Representative Martin Foncello (R-107) joined a group of business owners today in talking about the negative impact the state’s highway use tax on trucks will have on Connecticut’s economy. This tax will impact construction, lumber, energy, equipment transport, and agriculture among other industries. The Finance Committee is holding a public hearing on H.B. 5290, which would eliminate the tax, Friday at 2pm.
The law currently requires each carrier to file a monthly return with DRS to pay taxes owed, administered largely on the honor system. Many companies, whether knowingly or unknowingly, will be evading this tax. This is especially true with out of state trucks coming through the state, disproportionality impact in-state businesses the most.
