A public hearing was held this week by the legislature’s Public Health Committee on a proposal concerning aid in dying for terminally ill patients. The proposal, S.B. No. 1076, would give terminally ill, mentally competent patients the right to choose physician-assisted death. There would be requirements under this legislation, such as the person would have to be terminally ill, 18 years or older, and have less than six months to live. The state would also require two written requests from the patient to the physician. 10 other states and Washington, D.C. have approved medical aid in dying legislation.
