    Weatherizing Your Home Saves Money

    Weatherizing Your Home Saves Money
This article was archived from the previous WordPress site. Formatting and media should be close, but may not match the original post perfectly.

In honor of today being National Weatherization Day, I wanted to share information and tips on making your home more energy efficient.

Right now, people across Connecticut spend significant amounts of money to stay warm all winter and the state spends a lot of money on fuel assistance programs. Unfortunately, many of the homes with the greatest need are not weatherized, or don’t have enough insulation and weatherization to adequately protect against cold New England winters. Essentially, your hard-earned money is going right out the window!

According to officials at BantamWesson, people save an average of $510 after performing weatherization assessments and repairs.

As temperatures have already started dropping, now is a good time to check your home’s energy efficiency. Windows, doors, and electrical outlets are all common areas for your cool/warm air to escape, causing air conditioning units and heaters to work harder which increases your energy usage.

Weatherizing can help keep energy use down without sacrificing comfort. Please know that Wallingford Electric customers are eligible to have CMC Energy Services perform a home energy audit at no cost. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) offers the Weatherization Assistance Program, and both United Illuminating and Eversource offer a low-cost in-home assessment service, called Home Energy Solutions.

During the in-home visit, authorized contractors may make on-the-spot energy improvements, such as:

    • Sealing gaps and spaces around openings, between joists, etc.
    • Installing energy-saving LED light bulbs
    • Installing water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators
    • Performing health and safety tests on heating equipment
