Now that 2017 is in full swing it’s time to start thinking about filing your state and federal taxes before the April deadline. Filing taxes can be confusing for many, and expensive if you need to hire a tax professional but are on a fixed or limited income.
If you need assistance there are several options that might be able to reduce those expenses. The AARP Foundation and the IRS offer programs to help the elderly and certain low-income filers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program. These programs feature IRS-certified volunteers who donate their time and expertise to assist others.
For more information on these programs, please visit the AARP website or IRS website.
Additionally, the United Way can provide eligibility information and contact with programs throughout the state via Infoline211 or https://uwc.211ct.org/tax-help-click-here-for-information-and-resources/
This year’s tax filing deadline is midnight on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.
