State Representatives Craig Fishbein and Vin Candelora were joined by State Senator Paul Ciccarella in the House Chamber today to recognize Wallingford’s Mitchell Wollen for his outstanding community service and charity work during the past two years. Wollen, a senior at Xavier High School in Middletown, took his passion for helping others and created two separate charitable projects, including “Hearts for Healthcare Heroes” and “Wood for Warriors” to raise money for healthcare workers and veterans.
In an effort to spread positivity in the community, Mitchell started Hearts for Healthcare Heroes where he made and sold more than 1,500 wooden heart lawn signs to raise money for local nursing homes and hospitals. He raised more than $15,000 to provide snacks, meals, beverages and gift cards.
His second endeavor was to create the Wood for Warriors firewood stand where he sold nearly 250 bundles and raised more than $1,200 which he donated to the Navy Seal Foundation and the Rocky Hill Veterans Home. He also brought in 2,945 cans of food for Amazing Grace Food Pantry.
He will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in June where he plans to study mechanical engineering.
