During a ceremony in the training room of the Wallingford Police Department, State Rep. Craig Fishbein and State Senator Paul Cicarella presented citations to Wallingford Police  Sgt. Lou Brangi, Officer Nicholas Peckham, Officer Joe Smith, Officer Erik Judkins and Officer Vincent Szeligowski in recognition of their selfless service and effort to subdue an armed suspect in April.

    The citations read:

“Your quick, heroic response to the incident involving an armed suspect on April 14, 2021. Your outstanding efforts to go above and beyond the call of duty in service to the Wallingford community are recognized and commended. We applaud your dedication and commitment to keeping our residents safe and improving the quality of life in our community. We wish you the same safety and success that you guarantee for us every day, and we thank you for your service.”

The presentation coincided with National Police Week which occurs annually between May 9th and 15th.  Peace Officers Memorial Day was originally proclaimed by President Kennedy, and then established by Congress in 1962 to include the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. This national event recognizes the sacrifices made by officers who lost their lives in the line of duty with programs, candlelight vigils, religious services, receptions and fellowship among officers. Each year, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers and their families travel to Washington D.C. for events to honor fallen officers.
