It might have been cold and windy but that didn’t stop us from handing out boxes of fresh meat, dairy and produce to families in need as part of the Farmers to Family Food Box Program on Tuesday.
Together, the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, Master’s Manna, and a small army of intrepid volunteers transformed the large parking lot of Wallingford’s Good News Christian Church into two no-contact drive-through lines to provide this incredible program to the community. In only a few hours we distributed more than 1,000 boxes of food that weighed more than 30,000 pounds during the final handout of the season.
I joined the volunteers who placed the 30-pound boxes into the trunks of vehicles assembled in orderly lines that snaked around the building. Cars and trucks came in one after another for a box or two, with area church and non-profit groups loading up trucks with multiple boxes for distribute in their local community.
During this handout, each box contained a gallon of milk, a block of cheese, a package of hot dogs, a bag of potatoes and a bag of carrots, two containers of yogurt and a bag with seasoned chicken.
