Public Hearing Alert: Important Upcoming Domestic Violence Prevention Legislation – Wednesday, March 22

Important Upcoming Domestic Violence Prevention Bills
On Wednesday, March 22nd at 10:00 a.m. in Room 2C of the legislative office building, the legislature’s Judiciary Committee, where I serve as Ranking Member, will be holding a public hearing on several important measures that my House Republican colleagues and I proposed to address domestic violence.
Two of those will make changes to state law to provide victims, including victims of domestic violence, stronger protections. The first, H.B. 6887 will permit a sentence of life imprisonment without parole for those who commit murder during a family violence crime, prohibit the Board of Pardons and Paroles from taking any action in matters involving a conviction for murder with special circumstances, expand the electronic monitoring program for those who violate restraining orders and protective orders, and permit more involvement from the Office of Victim Advocate in criminal matters involving domestic violence.
The second measure, H.J.R. 261, would allow voters to decide on a change to the Connecticut State Constitution to give judges more authority to hold offenders without bail (based on the offender’s criminal history and with the judge’s discretion).
