I just wanted you to know that the state’s Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection publishes the annual Crime in Connecticut Report that contains multiple crime statistics placed inside three larger categories titled Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Property and Crimes Against Society.

The recently released 2023 report revealed that overall Crimes Against Property were up a staggering 11% from 2022, and specific categories like vandalism, fraud, and motor vehicle theft were up 25, 29, and 48% respectively!

Sadly, I’m not shocked.  For years, my Republican colleagues and I have been pressing to allow the brave men and women of law enforcement the ability to do their jobs and keep us safe.

Unfortunately, majority party Democrats continue to pass legislation that handcuffs their abilities and actually prevents certain common sense and long-standing police practices like asking for consent to search a vehicle during a traffic stop that have been proven to reduce crime and take guns and drugs off our streets.

If there is any good news in this annual report, it’s that Crimes Against Persons and Crimes Against Society were down overall compared to 2022, although there was an alarming increase in cases of rape, and obscene material charges.

I am thankful knowing the residents of Wallingford and Middlefield have excellent police, fire, and emergency protection.  Always be aware of your surroundings and be safe.
