CAN YOU AFFORD A NEW GAS TAX? (I can’t, and I know that many of you cannot as well …)

I just wanted you to know that Democrats in Hartford are proposing a new gas tax. As with most similar initiatives, I am opposed to this most recent overture to unreasonably increase your living expenses. While I remain committed to crafting policies that will help residents and businesses meet the challenges of the pandemic, the Democrats continue to present new ways to tax you. They just do not understand that such taxes are ultimately borne by the end user, thereby increasing the cost for all consumer commodities.  Today, Minority Leader Candelora stood together with  advocates from the food and fuel industries to share growing concerns about the Democrats’ most recent scheme to deplete the bank accounts of Connecticut’s residents, while also refusing to address their out of control spending.

Apparently this new gas tax will be implemented as a revenue mechanism to fund the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI). The program is designed to achieve a zero-carbon environment through a series of stark policy changes and mandated caps on Connecticut suppliers, ultimately driving up the prices you pay at the pumps.

A few weeks ago we addressed this bill in the Environment Committee, where it passed in a party-line vote of 21-11. I voted no then and remain committed against this new tax today. In my opinion, this is yet another tax levied on an industry that will be passed on to the hardworking people who depend on their vehicles to get to school, work and to see their family members.

If the legislation were to pass as written, residents can expect to see an increase of as much as 26 cents per gallon.

This regressive tax would hit Connecticut’s working class the hardest. Take action by learning more about the gas tax proposal and sharing your opinion by clicking the button below.
