State Rep. Craig Fishbein was recently recognized as an AARP Consumer Champion for his work last session to “prevent predatory real estate brokerage firms that bind property owners to listen to agreements for up to 40 years.”
Rep. Fishbein supported Senate Bill 201 – AN ACT CONCERNING UNFAIR REAL ESTATE LISTING AGREEMENTS AND THE CONNECTICUT UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES ACT – which was signed into law by Governor Lamont in June, 2024.
“Older adults want to stay in their homes and communities as they age, yet often struggle financially to do so.” Said Nora Duncan, AARP CT State Director. “Many were being confronted with offers of a small amount of quick cash, and being misled into signing unscrupulous real estate listing agreements that were binding for up to 40 years. These now illegal agreements impacted future homeowners, leveled hefty penalties to get out of the agreement, and resulted in liens if the penalties went unpaid. We thank Representative Fishbein for his leadership in passing legislation that protects homeowners from unfair service agreements.”
