Delnicki Welcomed I/DD Families to Family Hearing Day

HARTFORD- State Representative Tom Delnicki (R-14) along with a bi-partisan group state legislators and members of the Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities caucus participated in ‘Family Hearing Day’ at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. The event allowed legislators to hear the experiences, concerns and comments from state residents concerned about the long-term care of their adult developmentally disabled children.
Rep. Delnicki has been a member of the first-in-the-nation state legislative Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities caucus since 2017.
‘Family Hearing Day’ was created for legislators to directly hear and listen to parents concerns about their children’s’ future living needs, enlighten them on the critical lack of funding for support services, the seemingly endless wait lists for care and a myriad of other issues families face when accessing DDS supports and services.
According to the testimony Rep. Delnicki heard today, families have a need for the state Department of Developmental Disability (DDS) to be more flexible and permit for the greater availability of choice in services. The DDS one-size-fits-all system does not fit everyone in the community in terms of support.
