Rep. Case Speaks at Disabilities Act 25th Anniversary

FARMINGTON – Today State Representatives Jay Case (R-63), Jason Perillo (R-113) and Ben McGorty (R-122) recognized the 25th anniversary of the signage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event, hosted by the University of Connecticut’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, was held in order to promote the legislation’s intent, which is to provide equal access and equal opportunities for those with disabilities.
“It is important that we promote the protection of basic civil rights to those who are affected by developmental disabilities,” Said Rep. Case, who serves as co-chair of the state legislature’s Intellectual and Developmentally Disabled (I/DD) Caucus. “Through my personal experiences, I can assure you that we, as legislators, will continue to advocate for issues facing this population.”
In his remarks, Rep. Case also encouraged those who are affected by disabilities and advocates to reach out to their local representatives in order to voice their concerns.
“I am honored to be a part of this anniversary celebration,” said Rep. Perillo. “Ongoing advocacy efforts help us shape policies that support the disabled population, providing an equal opportunity for them to become productive members of society.”
“I am continually learning about the current issues facing those with disabilities,” noted Rep. McGorty. “Participating in today’s event was a good learning experience to gauge how far public policy has come and where new policy is needed.”
The ADA was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990.
